CAREER: The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is a Foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation's most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization. Early career is defined as tenure-track (or equivalent) Assistant Professor (or equivalent) with funding available for five years at a minimum of $400,000 to $500,000 depending on Directorate. Application due annually on the fourth Monday of July.

Visit the link and search for "New (Early Career) Investigator Program in Earth Science". Designed to support outstanding scientific research and career development of scientists and engineers at the early stage of their professional careers this program aims to encourage innovative research initiatives and cultivate scientific leadership in Earth system science. Emphasis is placed on the ability to promote and increase the use of space-based remote sensing through the proposed research. The average award is $80,000 to $90,000 per year or a period of up to three years. This program is solicited every two years. No solicitation is available at this time. We anticipate a solicitation in 2023.

The Air Force Office of Scientific Research YIP supports scientists and engineers who have received Ph.D. or equivalent degrees in the last five years and show exceptional ability and promise for conducting basic research (see solicitation for specifics re: eligibility). The objective of this program is to foster creative basic research in science and engineering; enhance early career development of outstanding young investigators; and increase opportunities for the young investigator to recognize the Air Force mission and related challenges in science and engineering. Each award will be funded at $150,000 per year for 3 years. Exceptional proposals will be considered individually for higher funding levels and longer duration. The YIP is included as part of the Army Research Office Broad Agency Announcement FY17-FY22. The objective of the YIP is to attract to Army research outstanding young university faculty members, to support their research, and to encourage their teaching and research careers. The program is open to U.S. citizens, Nationals, and resident aliens holding tenure-track positions at U.S. universities and colleges, who have held their graduate degrees (Ph.D. or equivalent) for fewer than five years at the time of application. With the New Innovator in Food and Agriculture Research Award, FFAR will support up to 10 early-career scientists with up to $200,000 per year ($100,000 from award, $100,000 match).  The award is designed to give recipients three years of financial support to pursue highly innovative research in one or more of FFAR’s seven focus areas and to act as mentors to the next generation of standout scientists in food and agriculture. This is a limited submission.

The Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program supports the research and teaching careers of talented young faculty in the chemical sciences. The award provides a $100,000 unrestricted research grant. This is a Limited Submission, review the Limited Submission Calendar for application information.

DOE Office of Science Early Career Research Program, supports the development of individual research programs of outstanding scientists early in their careers and stimulates research careers in the disciplines supported by DOE OS. DOE OS defines "early career" as those within 10 years of having received their Ph.D. and are untenured Assistant or Associate Professors on a tenure track. There can be no co-Principal Investigators. Funding is available at a minimum of $150,000 per year for five years.

The objective of the DARPA Young Faculty Award (YFA) program is to identify and engage rising stars in junior research positions, emphasizing those without prior DARPA funding, and expose them to DoD needs and DARPA’s program development process. The YFA program provides funding, mentoring and industry and DoD contacts to awardees early in their careers so they may develop their research ideas in the context of national security needs. The long term goal of the YFA program is to develop the next generation of academic scientists, engineers, and mathematicians who will focus a significant portion of their career on DoD and National Security issues.

The annual research announcement seeking YFA applications is typically posted to the Grants.gov, and fbo.gov websites between July and August.

Provides $250,000 in unrestricted funds to one Laureate in each disciplinary category (Life Sciences, Physical Sciences & Engineering, and Chemistry). Interested participants must hold a doctorate degree and a faculty position at an invited institution (other conditions apply, see the Eligibility category). Eligible applicants are tenure-track faculty who hold primary or courtesy appointments in chemistry, physics, or astronomy departments that offer bachelor's and/or graduate degrees in the applicant's discipline. For the 2023 proposal cycle, eligibility is limited to faculty members who started their first tenure-track appointment anytime in calendar year 2020. Accommodations are made for faculty who have taken maternity or paternity leave, or who have experienced medical conditions or research delays that prompted a tenure clock extension. Funding of $120,000 is available for a three-year project.
