This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications for Silvio O. Conte Digestive Diseases Research Core Centers (DDRCCs). The DDRCCs are part of an integrated program of digestive and liver diseases research support provided by the NIDDK. The purpose of this Centers program is to bring together basic and clinical investigators as a means to enhance communication, collaboration, and effectiveness of ongoing research related to digestive and/or liver diseases within the NIDDK's mission. DDRCCs are based on the core concept, whereby shared resources aimed at fostering productivity, synergy, and new research ideas among the funded investigators are supported in a cost-effective manner. Each proposed DDRCC must be organized around a central theme that reflects the focus of the digestive or liver diseases research of the Center members. The central theme must be within the primary mission of the NIDDK, and not thematic areas for which other NIH Institutes or Centers are considered the primary source of NIH funding.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) invites applications for the George M. O’Brien Kidney Consortium -- National Coordination Center (NCC) to lead a nation-wide effort to advance kidney research. The O’Brien Kidney Consortium will consist of ~8 National Resource Centers (NRCs) tasked with developing and sharing specialized kidney resources tools, technologies, services, and expertise and one NCC to lead, manage, and harmonize all aspects of the Consortium. Specifically, the NCC will: (1) provide administrative support and coordination for the entire Consortium, (2) establish and curate a “one-stop-shop” sharing portal for the entire Consortium, (3) develop and implement a multipronged communication and education plan for researchers and students interested in conducting kidney research to maximize national outreach and impact, (4) ensure that patient viewpoints, priorities, and preferences inform all aspects of the Consortium, and (5) administer and manage a national Opportunity Pool program to address gaps and promote collaboration.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) invites applications for the George M. O’Brien Kidney Consortium --National Resource Centers (NRCs) to lead a nation-wide effort to advance kidney research. By establishing this Consortium, the NIDDK aims to expand the breadth and impact of this program and achieve following outcomes: (1) improved coordination among Centers, (2) enhancement of national outreach and sharing, and (3) promote continuous technological innovations. The Consortium will consist of ~8 National Resource Centers (NRCs) and one National Coordinating Center (NCC). The NRCs will; (1) establish theme-based cores to develop and nationally share unique resources, tools, technologies, services, and expertise that will support and advance kidney research, (2) promote the development of novel resources to stay abreast of emerging trends, (3) Promote inclusion of investigators from diverse scientific disciplines, (4) Promote the inclusion of investigators and fellows from diverse backgrounds, and (5) expand the pool of investigators pursuing kidney research by attracting investigators that are new or from non-renal fields to join the kidney research community.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support innovative, discovery research studies to better characterize early-life risk factors and elucidate underlying causal mechanisms through which these risk factors contribute to the development of obesity during infancy and early childhood. Studies should aim to understand biological mechanisms that mediate behavioral and/or metabolic risk for obesity development in young children and how risk may be modified by other contributors such as psychosocial, contextual, and/or environmental factors. This FOA encourages multidisciplinary teams of scientists including, but not limited to those with expertise in basic, translational, clinical, and behavioral research.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to renew the IBDGC with a continued mission to characterize the genetic architecture of IBD phenotypes, particularly in populations currently underrepresented in IBD genomic studies, and to elucidate the biological mechanisms by which genetic variants influence IBD pathophysiology, phenotypes and clinical course. The Genetic Research Centers (GRCs) of the IBDGC will serve as sites for enrollment of IBD patients, relatives and healthy controls, for laboratory-based studies on biological samples obtained from these subjects, and for mechanistic studies of the risk variants identified, and of the genes, proteins and pathways they impact.

National Program for the Career Development Of Physician Scientists in Diabetes Research (Diabetes - Docs) (K12 Clinical Trial Optional)

The purpose of the Diabetes-Docs Program is to support the career development of physicians committed to a career in diabetes research. The program is intended to remedy the dearth of pediatric endocrinologists and physicians from other specialties conducting innovative research into the causes and consequences of diabetes. Diabetes-Docs will be a single national program, implemented by one or more PD/PIs, together with an advisory committee composed of basic and clinical investigators who have a strong record of funded research and successful training of physician-scientists. Although there will be one national administrative center awardee, scholars are expected to be appointed and supported at their home institutions around the country. The program will have a focus on Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) research, with the major funding from the Statutory Special Diabetes Program. Starting in the second year, the program will expand to support the career development of physicians whose research focuses on innovative projects in type 2 diabetes. The program is expected to deliver on goals to increase the diversity of physician scientists with independent research careers in the mission of NIDDK.
